Big IDEA: Replacing the SEC's EDGAR?

by Zack Miller on August 19, 2008

Dominic Jones has an interesting story/rumor that may be substantiated this afternoon as the Secuirty Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Chris Cox has called for a press conference this afternoon and has invited some of the blogosphere to attend.  The big news is supposed to be an announcement “to unveil a ‘futuristic information disclosure system for investors and markets.’”

EDGAR has been a boon for investors as investors have had tremendous access to financial reporting since its introduction.  That said, EDGAR has been painfully slow in terms of introducing better search technology and/or monitoring capability.  Some of this void has been filled by third-parties but I think the SEC is missing a tremendous opportunity to make more information more available to investors.
