The 37Signals blog has a nice piece out on their site. It’s not the usual Signal vs. Noise post about
software design, usability, etc. This has to do with the life/work balance.
Many investors/workaholics continue to slave away at their jobs, sacficing happiness at the altar of higher income. Retirement planning addresses gaggles of people who stick to this notion at all costs — I’m making myself miserable today in order to be happy later. You know what, I’ll retire early.
You know what? It doesn’t really happen.
The likelihood that you’ll strike gold after year’s of death-march living is still pretty low.
Instead, why not consider finding some balance now? Another money line from the post:
No need to divide your timeline on earth into the false dichotomies of Sucky Work Era and Blissful Retirement Era. Instead, you can just fill your life with a balanced mix of activities that you can sustain for decades.
This is not some polyannish childhood dream. I’m not saying to buck the system but rather work the system. To end the Sucky Work Era requires adjusting your lifestyle to the choices you make. Life is expensive. Children require time and attention.
